Welcome to the 66th edition of The Pixel Project’s VAW e-News Digest!
In the United Kingdom, girls who are being taken out of the country to be married against their will are hiding spoons or any other metal objects in their underwear to set off the metal detector at the airport and avoid the flight at the last minute. The revelation follows a Government warning to teachers, doctors and airport staff to be alert to the problem that school age girls who are seemingly being taken abroad on holiday may actually be on their way to a life of enforced servitude.
A silent but visible gesture to make Italians pause and reflect on women killed in domestic violence has appeared in the form of red signs left on seats at public events in at least two towns in Italy, where the victims might be sitting – if they were alive. The “Posto Occupato” campaign aims to draw attention to the vacuum left by all women victims of violence.
