Welcome to the 86th edition of The Pixel Project’s VAW e-News Digest!
Brazil is hosting the World Cup 2014 with the rest of the globe watching and reveling in the celebrated game of soccer glued to television screens. Unfortunately for many women around the world–especially in the United Kingdom–the number of domestic violence victims is expected to soar throughout the event’s time span, and to spike up even more during live matches. Safer Cornwall reckons there will be a rise of 25 per cent in domestic abuse across England because of the World Cup. It could be a lot more if the British team is dumped out of the competition early.
United States Secretary of State John Kerry joined Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and the British government on June 13, 2014 in calling for action to end the use of rape as a weapon of war. The four-day conference has received global attention due largely to the involvement of Jolie, special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). “So when people ask if we can actually outlaw sexual violence in warfare, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’,” said Secretary Kerry in his speech closing the event.
A Turkish man is charged with electrocuting his wife as punishment for giving birth to a girl again — while on the phone to police who failed to avert the crime. The Vatan newspaper published on its front page a transcript of a telephone call he placed to police in which he announced his murderous intent, in real time, on June 6, 2014. A defense lawyer at a court hearing on Wednesday criticised police for failing to talk the suspect out of his crime. “If a police officer with a high persuasive capacity and training were on the phone, (the woman) would be alive today.”
