Welcome to the 92nd edition of The Pixel Project’s VAW e-News Digest!
France’s Minister of Justice has launched a new service to assist women at risk of domestic violence. A mobile alarm device, apparently identical to a common cell phone so that the man does not notice the special report, equipped with an easily accessible button that will put the woman in immediate contact with an association and – if the alarm is confirmed – with the authorities. Not a toy, but a particular device not available for everyone, the Minister of Justice says.
Hamid Karzai’s last major act as president of Afghanistan may well be his order on Saturday to execute five men who were convicted of rape after a trial that the United Nations’ top human rights official has denounced as unfair. The convictions were based entirely on the defendants’ confessions, which all five men testified during the appeals process were obtained by torture at the hands of the police.
Britain’s first specialist clinic for child victims of female genital mutilation (FGM) opened in London on the 22nd of September as part of a push to eradicate the illegal ritual in the country. The clinic will liaise closely with police, social care and community groups and will provide evidence and expert witness statements for court cases. It will also help identify and protect girls at risk.
