Welcome to the 94th edition of The Pixel Project’s VAW e-News Digest! During a meeting in late October, United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at the Kenyan UN headquarters in Nairobi announced his support for a global media campaign, led by the United Kingdom’s news outlet “The Guardian,” to eradicate the practise of female genital mutilation. “Not only do we hope to support the Kenyan media in bringing the issue of FGM to national and global attention, but we hope to create a media model that can be reproduced in other countries,” he said. “The mutilation of girls and women must stop in this generation – our generation.”
[TRIGGER WARNING: Some of the news stories in this paragraph may be distressing for survivors of rape, battery, dating abuse, and sexual assault] In Canada, 9 women (including Lucy Decoutere, one of the stars of Trailer Park Boys) have come forward to expose celebrity radio host Jian Ghomeshi as a serial abuser who punched, kicked, and sexually assaulted women on dates. Ghomeshi was fired by the CBC from his vaunted position as host of the storied pop culture and current affairs radio show Q, dropped by every representative, and is now facing a criminal investigation by the Toronto Police as 3 women have filed charges against him. The Ghomeshi scandal has kicked off a national and global conversation about the importance of consent, rape culture, and victim-blaming.
A Southern California university is set to offer human trafficking survivors a full ride scholarship towards tuition, room and board. The Beauty for Ashes, a sex-trafficking survivor rehabilitation organization, scholarship fund at Point Loma Nazarene University’s Center for Justice & Reconciliation was launched in the last week of October 2014 with Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign. Every contribution matters. If you have any news you’d like to share about violence against women, please email The Pixel Project at info@thepixelproject.net.
