Welcome to the 107th edition of The Pixel Project’s VAW e-News Digest.
This fortnight, Angelina Jolie speaks out on violence against women. Celebrity spokespersons can be powerful allies for a cause, but her role has not escaped criticism – some wonder if more efforts had been spent on Angelina Jolie than on the cause itself.
Around the world interesting and inspiring activism changing social perception on women are taking place. In India a selfie-with-daughter project aims to curb female infanticide while the author of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler, performs a play that highlights human trafficking.
The number of minors in Cambodia’s sex trade is reported to be declining and FGM campaigns in Iraqi Kurdistan have been reported to have been successful. Google has also taken steps to protect women against violence by allowing removal of revenge porn from search results. These stories are silver linings that encourage us to continue our work in eradicating violence against women.
